Brother Martin and Jesuit New Orleans kicked off league play in Louisiana on a somewhat muddy Saturday.

The Brother Martin Crusaders took the contest 31-15 over the Blues Jays of Jesuit.

Senior scrumhalf Cameron Coughlin zipped into the corner to open the scoring nine minutes in. Joe David Ward made the tough conversion and Brother Martin led 7-0. Jesuit responded five minutes later, taking advantage of a knock-on in Brother Martin's half. The Blues Jays consolidated patiently and charged over to make it 7-5.

Another turnover to Jesuit gave the Blues Jays another good scoring chance and they capitalized to take the lead 10-7. Pressing their advantage, Jesuit scored one more to take a 15-7 lead into the halftime break.

But Brother Martin came away from the break with renewed energy. Flanker Caleb Williams thundered through and offloaded to Ward, who went over for the try. Ward converted his own effort to bring Brother Martin within a point at 15-14.

Junior hooker Austin Dupuis scored next by bulling over the line. Branson Perez converted and now it was 21-15 for Brother Martin. They extended that lead when wing grant Ruth scooped up a Jesuit dropped pass and ran in for the score. On the other wing, Caden Flanagan turned on the pace and outran the cover to score the final try of the match.

Brother Martin had a 31-15 comeback win.

"I thought it was a good opener for both teams," said NOLA Jesuit Head Coach Adam Massey. "Both teams showed potential to become very strong sides. The day was, however, a total slop-fest. Knock-ons were on offer by both squads all over the pitch. The winners on the day were all the boys who got to enjoy a day in the mud. The losers were the moms and the washing machines."
