Boys HS Club Rugby Rankings Week 19
Boys HS Club Rugby Rankings Week 19
Here's our Week 19 of HS Club rankings and we are taking the results from the Boys HS National Championships as well as the Florida Invitational Rugby Showcase, and some season review.
Season review is really looking at a team that got a win or a close loss and going deeply into their season to see if we missed anything.
Two of those are from Charlotte. The Cardinals won the Florida Showcase, and we took a closer look at their results and reminded ourselves that they beat Greenwich, lost competitively to Staples, beat Clayton and Cape Fear, and lost competitive to Aspetuck. They basically have performed consistently.
The Tigers lost all three teams in the Nationals TIer II. OK, you finish 8th, but were you overwhelmed or ... well their scored were 34-17, 26-22, and 27-17. The Tigers didn't win a lot of games, but they were always competitive, and we decided they needed some credit for that.

Granite Bay is, unsurprisingly, #1. Yes they almost lost their opening game at Nationals, but they didn't. They held on, and held on through the Mustangs before looking pretty good in the final over Belmont Shore. The rankings after that pretty much follow the finish at the national championships. However, Aspetuck, which finished 5th in Elkhart, is ranked #3. Why? Simply put, Aspetuck looked the better team. They lost to Belmont Shore in a very, very close game, and that was their only loss. They actually looked very comfortable in their victories. But Goff Rugby Report, you ask, their wins were only by 12 and 8 points. True, but those were two of the biggest victory margins of the club tournament.
The biggest margins of victory were: Granite Bay by 20 over Belmont Shore, Aspetuck by 12 over Woodlands and San Diego by 12 over Tempe, Granite Bay by 10 over San Diego, and Aspetuck by 8 over SOC.
Also, Aspetuck played 14 ranked teams this season, losing their opener to Fort Hunt by 7 (a game we ultimately gave them a mulligan on), tying Staples, losing to Gonzaga and to St. Ignatius, and losing by 2 points to Belmont Shore. So 9-4-1 against ranked teams, with three of those losses to teams who made national championship finals.
Yes, we feel comfortable putting Aspetuck at #3.
The other shift we did was put Thunder Rugby (Tier II #1) over United (HS Club #8). This is a tougher one because we think United played very well, and the argument about the Tigers holds true with United as well—three losses by 4, 7, and 5 points. But when you're in the Top 10 things are a little different. Thunder's closeness to all the really strong teams in Southern California, and what we saw in-person, prompted us to move Thunder ahead of United.
