Big Wins for Bloomsburg, Villanova in the MARC
Bloomsburg laid down a bit of a marker this weekend, beating rivals Bucknell to perhaps stake their claim as one of the top Men’s DII college teams in the MARC.
Bloomsburg took the game 26-17 in a game that was a battle through all 80 minutes.
“I’m really proud of my team,” said club president Arison Zeisloft. “We had some trouble early on with penalties but worked through it and were able to get the win.”
Working on discipline and avoiding giving up penalties in bunches will be something they need to work on, but Bloomsburg overall did play well. Centers Curtis Clifford and Billy Freeman were dynamic in attack. Meanwhile No. 8 Tommy Wendland was named player of the game mostly for his defense but also because he scored the try that iced the game.
(Note. Because of a score recording error on our part at GRR, Bloomsburg was dropped in the rankings this past week. They would have moved up win or lose this week, but obviously will move up significantly now.)
Also in the MARC, Villanova continued its strong play with a comprehensive victory over Lehigh to the tune of 66-7.
For Lehigh, their issue is depth and Villanova was able to pull away late with some help from their finishers.
“Lehigh had periods when they clicked and controlled the flow of the match. They have some very talented players,” said Villanova Head Coach Stephen Green.
Green is less impressed with his own squad, which needs to be more accurate and has much to improve on. He says that in part because he has seen what it takes to win at the national level and Villanova, he said, is not quite there yet.
