Bears Swipe Claws Through Arizona
Beware a good college rugby team that hasn't been able to play; really beware an excellent rugby team that hasn't played in a while.
Cal visited the state of Arizona this weekend and defeated University of Arizona 94-10 and two days late dismissed Grand Canyon University 84-0.
On Saturday 10 players scored 14 tries against the Wildcats. Sam Golla, Jack Manzo, Kevin Saunders, and Seth Purdey all scored twice, while junior fullback Max Schumacher kicked 12 out of 14 conversions and added a try for 29 points.
"We were good today in several aspects of play and we need work in other areas," said Cal Head Coach Jack Clark. "Most importantly for me is we want to play well. The boys want to play good rugby and they're willing to put in the effort. There are some good teams on the horizon and we need to keep building if we want to be successful."
Cal didn't waste any time, scoring five tries in the first 15 minutes for a 33-0 lead. There wasn't much Arizona could do to turn the tide.
"It felt awesome to get back on the field this week," added wing Nick, Bloom, who scored in the eighth minute. "In the first 20 minutes, we were really cohesive and executed our game plan. That's going to be really fundamental to our success this year: the coaches will lay out a game plan for us and we need to show our ability to execute it."
Two days later, Cal took on Grand Canyon and by 20 minutes were up 22-0.
"Young players learning what the next level is," said Grand Canyon University Head Coach Sean O'Leary. "Proud of our boys for staying in the fight. Great lessons learned playing four games in two weekends."
GCU played Santa Clara on Saturday.
"We are appreciative of both of these teams hosting us this weekend," added Clark. "We needed the rugby. We didn't play all that clean today, but the boys put in a ton of effort. If our identity is far less than perfect but high effort, I'm good with that. We took some injuries, which won't help in the short term, but we'll get them all back before long."
Lock Max Murphy scored three tries against GCU, while Schumacher continued to pile up the points with four tries and seven conversions for 34 points and 63 for the weekend.
"The main thing we had trouble with was handling errors which will be a big focus heading into this week against BYU," Schumacher said. "Plan execution will be another focus for us, especially with our halftime adjustments. We need to be able to adjust more efficiently in order to be successful."
That's right, Cal plays BYU next week. It doesn't get any easier for Grand Canyon as they take on Saint Mary's next Saturday.
All of that is important, but Cal it's clear that Cal laid down a marker ... maybe two ... this weekend.
