Baylor to 4-0 with Win Over Texas State
Baylor continued its run of strong results this past weekend with a 29-20 defeat of Texas State.
The win makes Baylor 4-0, and the Bears have some momentum as they go into a key Red River contest with Oklahoma this coming weekend.
Baylor took an early 7-0 lead before TSU answered with two penalty goals. But after that, Baylor centers Stewart Morris and Michael Haynes started to pound through the Texas State line, and that set up tries for flyhalf Parker Vincent and for Haynes, and a 24-6 Baylor lead.
Texas State came close to scoring late in the first half, but Baylor held them out.
In the second half, TSU kept at it and scored two converted tries to make it a 24-20 ballgame. With a Baylor player in the sin bin, Texas State came close to scoring the go-ahead try. But time and again Baylor players made crucial tackles. And then, with about six minutes left, Andrew Hondrich went over to seal the game.
"Overall this team is learning that it takes everything you have in the tank to win," said Baylor Coach Mason Hering. "They also see that when your number is called, you have to be ready to plug in and keep things moving. They have a lot of grit and toughness about them which combined with our size and fitness makes us a formidable opponent. We are realizing that now and others are starting to take notice too."
This was a non-conference game, but an important indicator of where Baylor is. The Bears are 2-0 in the Red River Conference, just behind Texas A&M, which is 3-0. They take on 1-1 Oklahoma this coming weekend, while all eyes might be on 1-0 LSU v 3-0 Texas A&M, also slated for the 12h.
