The biggest result of the week in Men's D2 has to be Boston University defeating 2025 champs Vermont in emphatic fashion.

Generally the NACR is very tight, and even when these teams played under a different conference name (NEWCRC), this was one of the best, most competitive conferences. However, the balance of power has often changed. Of late, UVM and Norwich were the top teams, with Maine and Coast Guard chasing. But Maine was a major contender not that long ago, and the same could be said of New Hampshire, UMass Lowell, and, at times, BU.

Even so, this was unexpected. The Terriers started strong with a shutout win over UNH and a 39-29 defeat of the Coast Guard Academy. Then they held Lowell to one try with a big win. All of these results showed that BU were good ... but how good? With Vermont having edged Norwich by a try early in the season it was easy to imagine that those two teams were at the top of the NACR again.

But this result, BU (GRR #16) 39, #4 Vermont 5, changes the perspective.

"The club’s development has been something to behold, even being a part of it it’s hard to believe," said BU Head Coach Ben Glauser. "Three years ago the players made the decision that what the club had been on and off the field was no longer acceptable, and ever since then the growth has been exponential. We set standards, low at first, and raised the standards as everyone’s skill and knowledge base increased."

So the work has been going on behind the scenes.

In 2025 BU wasn't getting the wins in the conference, but the pieces were still coming together. In the spring, they played in the Beast of the East tournament and made the final, where they lost in overtime to Fairfield. That was the moment where the players started to see the dividends of that culture work.

"Our performance through that tournament gave them confidence and belief that pushed them throughout the summer," said Glauser.

One of the most interesting things about this team is that 11 of the gameday 23, including captain Callum Neher, never played rugby before they attended Boston University.

So they have had to learn to play from scratch. And as they did that they decided that while playing is fun, competing is even bettwe.

"We’re building for quality and sustainability, it’s not just an infusion of short-term talent," said Glauser. "And we’re incredibly excited about what comes next. After the season there will be time to reflect on the magnitude of the wins and the success we’re seeing, for now we’re looking to back up what we’ve started by continuing to raise our level of play so we can achieve our full potential."
