Atlantic Coast All-Star Team Finalized for WURIT

The Atlantic Coast All Star team is set for the World University Rugby Invitational Tournament slated for this month in Bordeaux, France.

The tournament is involves six men’s teams and six women’s teams. There is no US-based women’s team, but the men’s team is in a pool with Ikey Tigers (University of Cape Town), New Zealand Universities Colts, the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds, Université de Bordeaux, and Sydney University.

The teams play each other in fix pool games over the course of three competition days. The games are shortened—20-minute halves.

After that series the top four teams go into the semifinals followed by the final, 3rd-4th, and 5th-6th games.

The games will be played September 21, September 23, September 25, September 26, and September 28, so it will be very demanding for teams.

The tournament allows recently-graduated players to compete and most of the Atlantic Coast players are from colleges in the Northeast, and a high percentage are players who declared for the recent Major League Rugby draft. They include 2022 Rudy Scholz Award winner Larry Williams, who is back from injury and will be taking up his US Army posting after this assembly. The list also includes 2023 #1 overall MLR pick Rick Rose, one of three first-round picks in the team and one of eight draftees overall.

We didn't organize these players into specific positions because the mix is gonig to be up to the coaches. Some loose forwards will probably slot in at lock and some props might end up at hooker. There are four players who are listed as flyhalf, but it's likely we'll see these players at center or fullback, as well.
