Arizona State is getting the numbers.

While Western Washington, San Jose State, and ARC are making waves on the West Coast, out in the desert, easily-overlooked Arizona State might well be as good as any of them.

The Sun Devils are solidly atop the California Conference Southwest after beating Southern California 69-7 and Claremont Colleges 72-7. With USC having just beaten Loyola Marymount, this weekend’s match between ASU and LMU could well finish up with another Sun Devils win.

Leading the way on the scoresheet is fullback/flyhalf Jacob Hurl, with 32 points in those to matches. Center Austin Cox has five tries, but really the scoring is coming from everywhere.

Head Coach Pieter Hugo said it has taken some time to get numbers up to the level he wants, but they are there now. And with numbers comes the responsibility to get everyone games, and they are doing that, adding in the Grand Canyon 2nd side for the ASU 2nd side.

“We have about 40 players at training and it’s a really healthy environment,” said Hugo. “We’re starting to get into our stride and we’ll make sure we play men’s teams and other teams to make sure everyone gets games. That has developed our depth.”

It’s a small league in the Southwest but all of the teams can play. That’s why the lopsided wins for ASU have been so noticeable.

“We’re just starting to go from strength to strength now and building on what we’ve done,” said Hugo. “And we have a group of guys who have been together for two to four years. They know each other and work well together.”

And they seem to be enjoying themselves, too.

Along with Hurl and Cox, No. 8 Pearse McNamara is back from injury and is a handful. Hooker Ethan Walls stood out against Claremont and he works nicely with props Nicolas Booz and Ian Nitz.

They havetwo second rows who are pretty new to the game, but the experience around them has helped. Another newbie, flanker Tyler Larson, has been outstanding, learning quickly, bringing the hard hits, and also showcasing a high work rate.

So … numbers, depth, a coaching staff that works hard to get everyone playing time … sounds like a pretty good formula.
