When one thinks of girls high school rugby in Texas, alum Meya Bizer is the first image that comes to mind. But Aircraft Charter Solutions Player of the Week Whitney Wilson has been carving out her piece of Texas history. A four-year star at Kingwood, Wilson capped her high school career with another Back of the Year nod, awarded after last weekend’s state 7s championship.

"Whitney has been a force to be reckoned with since she stepped on the field her freshman year," Texas Girls U19 coach Nick James wrote. "She is an incredibly dynamic player with an impressive arsenal of skills. Life U is lucky to be getting such a dedicated athlete."

Born and bred a soccer player, Wilson turned to rugby her freshman year of high school and was quickly tabbed for higher-level play – joining the Texas Selects at the Regional All Star Championships, attending high-performance camps across the country, and captaining the Serevi Selects at the LVI 7s, to name a few highlights.

Her hard running style and aggression, paired with a driven and mature personality, made her an appealing addition to the USA Junior Olympic team in summer 2014. The Youth Olympic Games was hosting its first-ever 7s competition, and Wilson was one of 12 high schoolers chosen to represent the USA. It was a crash course in international competition, as the junior Eagles acclimated to China and took on class teams like Australia and Canada. The USA finished fourth but the experiences were so much bigger than the team's place.

2015 has shaped up to be an exciting year as well. Wilson was selected to the Girls High School All American team for its first-ever competition in Las Vegas. The power runner got some time at scrumhalf and drew special praise from coach Mollie McCarthy, who tabbed the Texas as a player to watch. There were a lot of eyes on Wilson in Las Vegas, including future coach Ros Chou of Life University. In late 2014, Wilson signed with the DI varsity Running Eagles, and will look to build upon the program's 3rd place finish at the spring championships.

Wilson has made it no secret that she wants to play on the Women’s National Team, and she started forging that path toward an Eagles jersey soon after she touched a rugby ball. We’re eager to see where her career leads now that she’s entering a new and exciting phase of life.
