2016 Girls Select-Side Rankings
In the Girls Select-Side rankings, we make the opposite decision we made with the Boys.
With the Boys, we chose the top-ranked team with the points difference weighing heavily, and with the idea that the Rocky Mountain Challenge was, overall, tougher than the Great Northwest Challenge. Well, with the Girls, the GNC seemed to be a shade stronger than some other tournaments. In addition, we based this partly on how good, historically, Southern California has been. Northern California beat Southern California, and that game, as much as anything, prompted us to put NorCal at #1.
It could have been New Jersey, which crushed all before them in the Northeast. We're just not super-sold on the competitive level of all of those teams. It would have been nice to see New Jersey play Pennsylvania. That would have given us a little more to go on. Utah did brilliantly in the RMC, and take 3rd. Since most of these teams don't play each other outside of their one all-star tournament, it's tough to compare them all. So this is all a bit of a guess.
There are a couple more notes further down. Wisconsin lost to Tennessee, 22-21, and that's true. But if you compare Wisconsin's results against common opponents, Wisconsin does way better. Wisconsin didn't need to win that game against Tennessee to make the South RCT final, so while we don't discount it, we in the end have to rank Wisconsin above Tennessee.
Oregon finished 2-2, and we don't have their points-difference because we don't have specific scores on two games. But the Red Hawks' #10 ranking is much due to their 29-21 loss to Northern California.
We finished it up at top 10; it seems right given the small number of girls select sides in action.
