An avid reader joked with us this week saying the clash of top-ranked teams in Ohio - St. Ignatius, Xavier, and Penn - didn't help us at all in a tough task, as the three teams all went 1-1; we kind of have to agree.
It's very possible that any of those teams could push for consideration for the top spot, and in a rugby sense the weekend of games was hugely beneficial for the players involved. But from a rankings perspective, this series was a headache. In the end, we made some decisions based on rest (St. Ignatius had a day of rest between games, and neither Penn nor Xavier did), and points difference (Xavier +8, Penn -2, Ignatius -6) promoted us to move Penn down, move St. Ignatius and Xavier up, and re-arrange them in order Xavier-Penn-St. Ignatius.
None of these results should be put on their permanent record. All, in the weekend, showed they could be #1 at some point if the stars align. Also moving this week in the single-school rankings, Jesuit of New Orleans, by virtue of beating St. Paul's, and by virtue of also having logged some other good results we didn't pay enough attention to, joins the rankings at #20.
Georgetown Prep moves up with a big win over RBMA, which drops perhaps more than they deserve to because other teams are holding steady or winning. St. Thomas out of Houston continues to climb up - their only two losses have been to very strong teams, mind. Unionville comes in thanks to a win over Cumberland Valley. Bixby thanks to a win over Union. Highland and Fairfield also enter what is now a top 50. We tried to find room for Archbishop Riordan, but couldn't ... yet. Watch out for Pelham, which moves up six spots, and could be the bellweather of some other New York teams.
We've moved CK McClatchy out of the single-school rankings because they have switched from being a single-school team to being a club. We didn't know that. Now we do.
