2016 Boys HS Club Rankings #12
Well the HS Club rankings gut turned around drastically this week, and that is often what happens come playoff time.
Several highly-ranked teams lost games. Others showed that perhaps they are deserving of a slightly better ranking. Here are the highlights:
Coastal Dragons won two playoff games and beat #15 San Diego and they move up to #7 from #13. That is, in part, because #6, #9, #10, and #11 all lost. United lost to unranked Genesis. Here's a weird on. Genesis is undefeated, but their games have not been against some of the strongest teams in Utah. With United looking ahead to the NIT and not playing in the state playoffs, they could also have been testing out a different lineup. It's tough to evaluate, as United has done this before - lost in-state and then performed brilliantly at the NIT.
So ... United drops down, but no horrible, and Genesis moves into the Top 60, just ahead of United. Also dropping down in Santa Monica, which lost to the San Diego Young Aztecs, a team we wanted to rank last week but couldn't find room for. The Young Aztecs come in at #16. Doylestown keeps beating ranked teams by massive amounts. It's time to bump them up - they move up 25 spots.
Also coming into the Top 60 are Northside (beat previously undefeated Polk County in Oregon), and Harpeth after Harpeth beat South Doyle. The Hampton Heat are in at #51 as they just keep winning. The Terrors is a DII team in Colorado, but their results have been really, really good. Orca U18s out of SoCal are another team we were looking at. They lost in the playoffs, but only 25-20 to the Mustangs, and that seems enough.
So we had to make room. Two of the lower-finishing Hawaii teams drop out. We're not doing anything personal against Hawaii (oh wait, Californian team Hawaiian Gardens is out, too ... uncomfortable coincidence) ... it's just that they weren't blowing us away and someone else finally did. Albuquerque Eagles also drop out, as does West Valley and Raleigh. The reason? Other teams are logging impressive results against well-regarded teams, simple as that..
