Sacramento Amazons Will Reload
Does anyone like to finish 2nd? Certainly it's no fun, but the Sacramento Amazons have plenty to be proud of.
The big, powerful Amazons team did indeed lose to Fallbrook in the NIT final, but they weren't blown out (most Fallbrook opponents were), and they won an imposing Northern California league.
"I expected our team to improve on our 5th place finish in the 2013 NIT," said Head Coach Sefesi Green. "The girls fought hard all season and stayed undefeated through a tough NorCal season. NorCal as whole has been improving over the past five years. Along with the All Star program, we have been able to raise the level of play throughout Northern California. The Youth Rugby movement is booming here and feeding us experienced ruggers."

Plesanton Girls a Pleasant Surprise
Only three years old the Pleasanton girls team won the Tier II of the Girls NIT, defeating State College, Kingston, and Morris while allwoing only three points.
The Northern California team started in 2011 when Caitlin Reid approached coaches in the Pleasanton youth program about starting a girls rugby team. Reid, who had grown up in Scotland and been part of a rugby family, wanted in on the fun.
So they had one player, and after a youth camp going into 2012 they got another girl. Two became six, and then ten, and finally 15. They played, and won, NorCal's DII girls league, and kept going from there.
Play Rugby Wins NY
The Player Rugby USA New York Academy defeated Kingston in overtime to take the 2014 New York girls state championship.
Player Rugby hammered Hamburg of the Buffalo area 62-10 in Saturday's semis.
Kingston, the 2013 winners, defeated Kenmore of the Buffalo area 24-10 to make the final.
Hamburg edged Kenmore 10-5 for third.
How Fallbrook Won Again The first thing you see is the size disparity. In just about every national final they've played, the Fallbrook Girls Team from Southern California is the smaller squad, sometimes by a significant margin.
It's just a function of the students at their school, just as it is that the Sacramento Amazons are bigger. This year, it seemed the disparity was augmented by the fact that Fallbrook lost some key personnel, not least of whom was Megan Pinson. Yet somehow, Fallbrook made it back to the NIT final, and once again, in fact for the fourth year in a row, they won it all.

Girls National Championship Historical Champions
Historical Champions in the Girls NIT.
In 2000, a group of girls HS team got together to host their own national championship. They did this for eight years before USA Rugby took the competition under their organization. The USA Rugby Girls National Championship lasted for four season, 2008-2011, before USA Rugby made it a National Invitational tournament in 2012.
The organization decided not to hold an NIT in 2013, and a committee of girls HS teams formed a new NIT panel, and resurrected the competition. That panel runs the NIT now.
On May 18, 2014 Fallbrook (Calif.) defeated the Sacramento (Calif.) Amazons 27-17 to win their fourth straight NIT.
