Boys HS Scores Weekend Of April 14
Thanks for checking back with us. We've been moving servers, but we're also checking on HS scores.
Some interesting ones this weekend, but also the weather has played havoc with schedules. Check back for updates.
St Edward Concludes Successful California Tour
St. Edward finished off a very successful tour of California with three victories and a loss, and a trip to #1 in the FloRugby Single-School rankings.
After beating Jesuit of Sacramento in a game that bumped St. Ed's to #1, St. Edward lost to Australian touring side Toowoomba. Grant Gutchall and Conor Forrestal each scored tries in that game, with Forrestal adding a conversion and a penalty in the 43-15 loss.
St. Ed's then turned around and defeated Mira Costa 64-14 behind three tries each from Charlie Green, Anthony Perrins, and Brendan Greenwell. And then St. Edward beat Santa MOnica 61-12. Green and Brendan Greenwell scored two each, and Josh Leidich scored three.
Red Mountain Wins Crucial Clincher In AZ
Red Mountain bounced back from a series of canceled games to defeat Ahwatukee this past weekend and finish the Rugby Arizona regular season undefeated for the 5th year in a row.
The Red Mountain team hadn't played a meaningful game since the Ra Puriri Invitational, and needed to win to clinch 1st against abig, physical Ahwatukee team.
"They are the biggest team we have come against so far and after their close loss to Phoenix last week, they were looking to bring something extra into the game," said Red Mountain Coach OJ hawea. "Having not played in over a month took its toll on us early and we weren't able to get moving well against their massive forward pack. Our defense was organized well, but also wasn't good enough to put any pressure on their attack."
BC High Logs Opening Week Win In MIAA
The Massachusetts Boys HS varsity league is in ful swing, and one of the favorites, BC High, opened up with a 20-12 victory over Lincoln-Sudbury.
Both teams showed signs of rust in their first match, as there were a few handling errors, which were exacerbated by blustery conditions and cold temperatures.
BC High struck first, when ten minutes in senior scrumhalf George Haikal picked and dove for the line after a lengthy possession in LS territory.
Moments later, sophomore center Tommy Rice ran a snappy line in the midfield to break the Lincoln-Sudbury defense and cover 25 meters before committing the final defender and offloading to junior Michael Bennet, who finished it all off for a try.
Monarch Looks Strong In Colorado
Defending Colorado DI HS champion Monarch HS has has picked up where it left off last season in Colorado's Boys HS league, logging a recent 47-23 defeat of East HS, and defeating Dakota Ridge this weekend.
Monarch has been led by a superb second row in Mason Kreiter and Max Laychak, while the halfback hinge of Lucas Agasse and Landon Coleman has run the offense nicely.
"What’s interesting to note is that we graduated 14 last year with nearly all the graduates being starters," said Monarch Head Coach Chris Hanson. "I am very proud of these kids for the time and effort they put in to be the best rugby players they can be."
On Saturday's win, Hanson said the team picked it up after a slow first half (halftime score 7-7) and ran out 33-7 winners.

Unbeaten Gibbons Leads Florida Final Four
Florida’s high School champion is going to be a little bit closer to being picked with the state semis this coming weekend.
After the regional playoffs produced two winners, the top two from each region play off in a crossover semifinal Saturday. Jupiter is at Orland and Jacksonville is at Cardinal Gibbons.
Perhaps the big surprise is that the Tampa Krewe is not in this group. Tampa went 5-1 in Region 1, finishing 1st, but lost 28-19 to 4-2 Jacksonville in the playoffs. Tampa ended up winning a consolation game two weeks ago 5-3 over the Cape Pirates. Orlando had beaten the Pirates to make the final four with Jacksonville, and in fact beat Jacksonville 19-7 in the Region 1 final.
No such surprises in Region 2, as Cardinal Gibbons (Region 2 District 4 winners), and Jupiter (Region 2 District 3 winners) won their semis going away.
Utah Latest: Herriman, West Valley Win
Herriman held onto its top 5 ranking with a defeat of #9 Snow Canyon Saturday in Utah Youth Rugby action.
Snow Canyon made the 4-hour drive to Herriman on Saturday in what had all the makings of a classic. Although the teams are no strangers to each other in the postseason, this was the first time they had met in the regular season since 2015 (won by Snow Canyon) and the first time they had met in any capacity since the 2016 State championship game (won by Herriman).
Heart Of Illinois Challenge To Help Grow Game In Downstate
On Saturday, 7 April, Rugby Illinois, University of Illinois RFC, Effingham RFC, and La Salette Rugby are partnering to host the Heart of Illinois Rugby Challenge. Aimed at growing the sport in the rural counties of Illinois, the HofI challenge will feature several matches culminating in a 12:30 cup draw between the Mustangs of Morton and the Notre Dame de La Salette Lions. The winner will take home the North-South Illinois Challenge Cup.
Boys HS Scores March 27-31
Here are some scores from high school rugby around the country this past weekend.
It was Easter weekend, so many leagues took the weekend off.
St Edward Beats Jesuit of Sacramento
St. Edward HS of Ohio pulled off a major upset in beating #2-ranked single-school Jesuit of Sacramento.
Jesuit went into the game ranked behind Ohio team St. Ignatius in the FloRugby Top 50. St. Edward came in ranked #7. But most would have expected this to be a straightforward Jesuit victory.

Herriman Wins Two In Utah
Herriman opened up its Utah Youth Rugby league season with two victories last week.
In a rematch of last year's state final, Herriman visited Highland on Friday night. Both teams were less than full strength coming in, with Highland out three starters due to suspensions for fighting, and Herriman out, with starters with Taysan Hammer in London at the Rosslyn Park 7s with the Utah Cannibals, and two other starters out with injuries, so that evened things up.
Woodlands Hosts Come And Take It
The Woodlands Youth Rugby Club held its first ‘Come and Take It’ Rugby Tournament in The Woodlands, Texas over spring break. Nearly 650 players representing 37 teams from across Texas descended upon The Woodlands Township Gosling Sports Fields on March 16th and 17th. Both boys and girls ranging in age from 5 to 18 came together for what is being recognized as the largest Rugby tournament to ever be held in the State of Texas according to officials with Rugby Texas, the youth rugby organizer for the State of Texas.
NorCal Premier Latest: Jesuit, Granite Bay Win
Jesuit of Sacramento ran out winners in an intriguing Northern California matchup, taking CK McClatchy 35-19 Saturday.
The rain in California left the fields muddy but it was a sunny day, making for a day where players were covered in mud that then dried on them. That slowed down both teams at times.
