USA Pushes France, But France Wins
France defeated the USA 33-9 in the 2019 Rugby World Cup, and maybe when people look at this score well in the future they will think it was a relatively easy win for the French, but it wasn't.
At 65 minutes the score was 12-9. The Eagles were just as good as the USA. Both teams got out of scary scoring opportunities for the opposition with some desperate defense. IN the end, France was able to open the game up a little bit more to get those elusive tries, while the Eagles had to settle for three AJ MacGinty Penalties.
Despite the fact tha France committed more penalties, they were let of at least once with a warning for a professional foul on the goalline when they should have received a yellow card.
Eric Fry's Long Journey
Eric Fry was an All American at Cal as a flanker, and then when he was switched to prop, he was an All American again; that switch has sent him on a journey all over the world, and now, in Japan, he is going to be playing against the nation he has called home for the last three years—France.
"It's a very special game for me," said the USA prop forward. "I've been in France for the last three years, been immersed in the culture. It's very exciting to play against the country that I've been in. So going back [to Vannes] in three or four weeks, I want to be able to look those guys in the eyes and show them I gave everything and gave France a good run for their money."
Fry was part of the seemingly unceasing Jesuit-Cal-Eagles pipeline, playing on championship teams all the way through.
Hanco's Journey The World Cup
Representing your country in a World Cup is undoubtedly one of the greatest achievements in any athlete’s career — regardless of the sport, regardless of the outcome.
And when Hanco Germishuys first picked up a rugby ball as a baby in South Africa, little did he know his journey would bring him to the highest peak of American rugby.
“As a baby I’d always go to my dad’s rugby matches and since then, I’ve just played with bigger teams and joined his practices. After that, I was hooked playing since I was six years old,” he said. “When I turned 15 we moved to America and since then I’ve been playing rugby here.”
When Germishuys moved to the U.S., his passion for rugby moved with him. And even though he was no longer pursuing a well-known and highly recognized national sport, it didn’t change anything.

Men's All Americans Named For Canada Clash
USA Rugby's Men’s Collegiate All-American head coach James Willocks has named his squad to play the All-Canadian University XV on July 27, at Infinity Park in Glendale, Colo.
The selection has come after two camps were held, one in Norco, CA, and one in New Rochelle, NY, camps that brought in 72 student-athletes to try out.
“This years process has been very expansive and has allowed us to access a greater portion of the collegiate landscape,” said Willocks. “Our regional camps and games against Toronto and RUNY academy sides provided a great platform to identify emerging talent. We are excited for the challenge ahead against international competition and to build on the success of last year’s assemblies.”
