Women DII College Top 20 - Sept. 17, 2014
It’s been two weeks since Goff Rugby Report’s last Women DII College ranking, and plenty has happened since then.
Most of the drops occurred due to teams’ idle nature. For those with league seasons in the spring, we’ll keep a close eye on performances at 7s tournaments and friendlies, but there’s just too much rugby going on to hold a high ranking spot on reputation alone. With that said, teams like South Florida and Humboldt State are in danger of sliding off once traditionally strong teams like Shippensburg and Slippery Rock get some conference games under their respective belts.
Two unranked teams jumped onto the Top 20: Tri-State’s Rutgers, which has not relinquished a point-against yet; and Arkansas, which replaced Nebraska after its 48-15 triumph over the Cornhuskers.
Davenport made the biggest leap in the rankings, moving from #11 to #7. The Panthers are 3-0 and defeated two Division I teams last week: Big Ten’s Michigan 32-7 and varsity Lindenwood 20-5. Davenport begins its quest for the Great Lakes conference title on Friday against Grand Valley, which should be the teams’ toughest competitor in the regular season.
And finally, it was a tough call on #2 and #3, but we kept the teams intact. Even though Mary Washington lost to James Madison, the Virginia side challenged itself against a DI team, and that pays off. Notre Dame College has two huge wins to its credit, but the victories were so one-sided that one questions whether the Falcons have played any defense yet this fall. Those questions, however, will be answered on Sunday, when #2 and #3 contest a friendly on Mary Washington’s turf. It’s arguably the most exciting DII friendly of the season.
Stay tuned!
