Women DI College Top 20 - Sept. 25, 2014
No movement in the top five of the Women’s DI College Rankings, but plenty through the meat of the lineup.
The top two teams, Penn State and Norwich, were busy these previous two weeks. The Nittany Lions doubled-up both weekends, splitting its squad for four monster wins. Norwich’s victories against Northeast opponents AIC and Army lent some perspective to the teams’ relative strengths, and the rankings reflect as much. The Yellow Jackets and West Pointers meet this weekend, and we’re leaning toward the Cadets on this one.
West Chester had a nice win over Temple, which has struggled to mimic its successes enjoyed in DII. Right behind the Rams is the Big Ten’s Indiana, which scored 184 points during the previous two weekends. Granted, the Redstorm’s wins came against the conference’s historically weaker teams, Purdue and Michigan State, but back-to-back shutouts is a worthy achievement.
Although Northern Iowa opened up its Midwest season with a win, the eight-point victory over Iowa State isn’t the result to which we’re accustomed, especially during league play. The Panthers should still win their conference and region, but the graduation of some important players is still resonating.
Brown made a big jump, and that’s all due to its 24-15 win over Harvard in the Ivy League opener. The Bears followed with a 76-10 win over Penn, while the Crimson rebounded with a 54-0 victory over Yale. The teams don’t deserve to be five spots away from each other, but the inactivity of New Mexico and California might clear some room for Harvard to close in during the next ranking.
We’re keeping an eye on Dartmouth, which trounced Princeton in the teams’ league-opener. We’re also watching Central Washington, which is taking on Washington State in a pre-season friendly. It will be a first look at the new varsity squad, which has a new coach and scholarship athletes.
