AIC Women Edge Army at Whistle
In a clash of two well-regarded women’s college teams in the Northeast, American International College scored with time up to defeat Army 34-31 Saturday.
AIC trailed 31-29 with no time left when they burrowed their way to the Army tryline, and No. 8 Jess Davis scored to win the gam for the Massachusetts school.
The Black Knights got on the board first, with Lindy Clark scoring a try in the third minute, converted by Carissa Pekny. But AIC tied it up when Muneera Patton touched down and Sarah Coucci converted. Army pulled ahead once more, this time with Chioma Odocha scoring. That made it 14-7, but AIC scored twice in quick success, through Bridget Kahelee, who capitalized on an Army turnover in their 22, and Jamirah Barden, who raced in from 60 meters out to give AIC a slim 17-14 lead.
In a hugely physical contest, the two teams fought to a standstill for the remainder of the first half. In the second half, the Yellowjackets extended their lead when captain Patton pushed her way over. With Coucci’s conversion AIC led 24-14. Budd Bay U19 product out of Olympia, Wash. Carrie Vaillancourt added another and it was 29-14.
But back could come the Black Knights, as Kate Roose found some space out wide, and again, and again, scoring three times in just over 20 minutes. Just like that Army was in the lead 31-29.
With the game clock at zero AIC had one more shot; they secured the ball at the restart, marched their way downfield, and scored to win it.
With the loss, Army falls to 3-5 on the season. They'll conclude the 2014 regular season with a Halloween matchup from Anderson Rugby Complex against service academy rival Air Force.
AIC is 7-2, having lost only to Norwich University. They look to the conference playoffs next week.
