Stony Brook Revving Up
Stony Brook Revving Up
After an impressive 70-12 defeat of Binghamton Saturday, Stony Brook University stands at 3-0 in the Empire Conference, just behind Kings Point thanks to bonus points.
The two teams will face off October 11, but first Stony Brook will have to get through Brockport, and Kings Point faces Syracuse.
Head Coach Jerry Mirro said his squad started slowly this year, hence the tight 24-16 defeat of Colgate in Week 1. But they have been improving. They handles a big, physical Binghamton team that was probably hit hard in its depth thanks to the Jewish holiday.
Out wide, Stony Brook is beginning to get dangerous.
“In our backline play I am extremely happy,” said Mirro. “I thought it would be a weak spot, but the B-side guys from last year have moved up and are as good as or better than how we were last season. We have got some depth in attack.”
Stony Brook had no preseason games and hit the ground running in league play. It was tough to do that, but they’ve weathered that small storm. The leadership of the likes of prop Jimmy Sheridan, try-scoring No. 8 Phil Salter, PJ Abelein at flyhalf and Shane Wend at center - whom Mirro says is “another Sean Rafferty” kept them on track.
Now they have to avoid looking past Brockport to the clash with Kings Point.
“We know that will be a big game,” said Mirro. “But Brockport is very tough. They will be a test and we can’t forget that.”
