DI College Weekend Roundup

Here’s a roundup of the latest in Men’s DI College Rugby from this weekend:

Army handed Cornell a convincing 49-0 defeat in a non-conference clash in Ithaca, NY. David Huff scored three tries in quick succession in the second half, while Thomas Del Pino scored two in the first period. Logan Pearace, Collum Magee, and Benjamin Foley all scored a try, while Pearce added three conversions and a penalty.

Army looks ahead to Penn State next week at West Point.

For their part, Penn State were impressive in a 30-6 defeat of Davenport in Michigan in a non-conference game. Also in non-conference, Wheeling Jesuit beat West Virginia 24-5, while Indiana handled Kentucky 33-7. The most exciting game was Bowling Green v Ohio State, which BGSU won in the final moments 31-29.

Also in a non-conference clash, Iona defeated St. Bonaventure 36-24 in a meeting of two NY teams that had started strong. Wing Steve Lennon, center Michael Scarcella, lock Agron Balai, No. 8 Evan Saikos, and fullbacks Brian Moyo and Michael Marino all scored tries, with Moyo adding three conversions in a result that puts Iona firmly among the teams to beat in Rugby East.

Another team to be is Kutztown, which opened its league season with a 62-0 shutout of Buffalo. On a rainy day in Pennnsvylania, KU showcased some nifty ball movement and got an early try from flanker Jordan Ghyzel, who was in support. KU ultimately scored 12 tries, getting the back line, including new recruit Nu’u Aiava and longtime speedster Robert Stortz over three grimes apiece. Fullback Trent Hensley dotted down along with wing Vetekina Malafu. The Golden Bear forwards dominated the tight play but Buffalo never backed down. No. 8 Wes Hartmann, flanker Jordan Ghyzel and lock Adam Greider also scored for Kutztown, which struggled to kick conversions due to the wet ground and most of the tries being in the corner.

In the SCRC, LSU and Florida won easily.
