Honey Badgers Stay On Top

University City defeated Coronado 45-14 to move to 4-0 in the Southern California Varsity White San Diego conference, putting some distance between them and the rest of the league.

But Honey Badgers Coach Jason Lee said the game wasn’t a runaway, despite the fact that Coronado is 0-2.

“Coronado dominated the breakdown in the first half and were the more  aggressive team around the breakdowns,” said Lee. “But I was proud of our forwards for stepping up to the challenge and responding in the second half with better commitment to the rucks. Our set piece play, especially off our scrums, went well.”

Brandon Cole was a hard runner at No. 8 and Stephan Phillips was effective in support.

“Coronado’s aggressive play on defense made it tough for us to operate as smoothly as we would like on offense but our boys hung in there and managed to put in some tries later on in the game.”

Patrick Madden once again played well at flyhalf, while fullback Ben Lolly-Wilson was tested with some high balls from Coronado, and performed admirably.

Alta Vista improved to 3-1 with a 45-21 defeat of Mira Mesa.

Up ahead for the Honey Badgers will be MIssion Vista and Rancho Bernardo, and that would set them up for a 6-0 record.
