GRR: Davenport University
It’s the opening of the small but intense DIA Mid-South Conference, and a clash between Goff Rugby Report’s #1 team, Life University, and the #7 squad, Davenport.
So, basically, it has everything.
Davenport University has been training outside exactly once in the last few months, but it was enough to propel them to an improbable victory over Arkansas State in Jonesboro, Ark. Saturday.
Davenport defeated Lindenwood 7-3 Saturday in a non-conference game that finished off a difficult fall for Lindenwood.
Last weekend, Lindenwood rugby player Charles Labry was struck and killed by a car. The native of Beaune, France was a popular member of the team and the game this Saturday was played in his honor.
Davenport University’s 39-10 defeat of Wheeling Jesuit was notable partly because the Grand Rapids, Mich. team knocked off a ranked opponent, but also that they did it without their captain and arguably best player, Angus MacLellan, who was at the ARC with the USA team.
