Ready No Matter What - Eagles Look Ahead to Japan Game
The final Rugby World Cup game kicks off Sunday with coverage starting at 2:30pm ET, 11:30pm PT, and players and coaches discussed what they want to accomplish.
“The lads have a lot left in their legs after a good rest going into this game,” said defense coach Phil Bailey, so expect a good performance. Sometimes you don't get that but there's no reason we can't go into tomorrow expecting a performance."
The Eagles and Brave Blossoms will play at Kingsholm, the home ground of the Gloucester Rugby Club. It will be their first game at a dedicated rugby ground.
"We prepare the same no matter where we are playing,” said prop Eric Fry, adding: “It's nice to play at a rugby-specific ground and I’ve played here before and know there will be an amazing atmosphere. It shouldn't change how we play."
“Going into any tournament, and especially a World Cup, you want to get into the next round,” added Head Coach Mike Tolkin. “We thought it was a challenge and a far-reaching goal of ours but, with the way we’ve played at times going into the tournament, we could have come away with two wins. I think looking back at the last three, we would have wanted a bit more consistency and, at times, we let ourselves down.”
But, said Tolkin, competing is important and has its benefits.
“It’s not a step back. Obviously publicity from winning is big but, in a strange way, people see the tournament, see what the teams are doing and see what the possibilities are. They therefore get more excited and motivated to make things happen. They say we’re not where we can be and I think that has stimulated people more than the last World Cup."
