Carroll played for Australia in 1908 and 1912, a loss to Wales, a win in the Olympic final, in which he scored two tries, and a defeat of the USA in 1912.

It was that tour of North America that changed his life, as the skilled flyhalf decided to stay in the United States. A year later he was on the USA team that lost to New Zealand. 

Carroll served as a officer in the US Army during World War I, and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for heroism in combat. He remained in America after the war, got his degree from Stanford, where he played rugby for four years, and joined the USA team for the 1920 Olympics. 

Once again he was the flyhalf, helping lead the Americans to a surprising Gold Medal in Antwerp. Carroll's contribution to the USA team in 1920 was massive, as his experience with the game outside of the USA, with him playing a key decision-making position, was highly influential. 

Daniel Carroll was inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame, and while he did play for another country, he became an American, remaining a US resident from 1912 until his death at New Orleans at the age of 68.
