Who Will be #1? You Tell Us!
Which team will be the best in the country once we're done with the 15s season in May?
Goff Rugby Report ended the fall with AIC ranked the best among teams with fall seasons. (See here), but AIC plays 7s in the spring, so we might not be able to compare apples to apples. In addition, we've seen the same four teams at the top of the 15s heap in the last three years.
In 2013, BYU won the Varsity Cup, beating Cal in the final, but it was very close.
Life won the DIA final over St. Mary's. It, also, was very close.
In 2014, St. Mary's beat Life in a close DIA final.
BYU beat Cal in the Varsity Cup in a game that was close, but not quite as nailbiting as the previous year.
In 2015, St. Mary's once again beat Life in a back-and-forth DIA final.
BYU beat Cal in a back-and-forth game in the Varsity Cup final.
Not only have those four teams been the top four in each of the last four years, the top four teams in the competitions have hardly changed. In the Varsity Cup, Central Washington and Navy have been the losing semifinalists every year. In DIA, it has changed a bit, with Arkansas State appearing twice, Lindenwood appearing twice, and Davenport and Cal Poly once each in the last three years.
(Before the Varsity Cup was invented, BYU beat Arkansas State in the 2012 DIA final, and in 2011 it was Cal over BYU.)
