GRR: Kahuku
there was a lot of talk about collision courses as Danville and Peninsula Green both won Friday to book a spot in the Pacific Cup Final Saturday.
In the three-day, eight-team, three-games-each tournament, Danville met Red Mountain in one semifinal, and Peninsula Green faced off with Kahuku in the other.
The first round of the Pacific Cup is in the books, with Peninsula Green, Danville, Red Mountain, and Kahuku all winning games.
Peninsula Green played a tough game against the Bay Barbarians, a team made up of players from Archbishop Riordan and Los Gatos. it was a talented and athletic Barbarians side, but Pen Green's unity of purpose saw them through 29-12.
The Pacific Cup kicks off Thursday at noon with some of the top HS teams in the nation facing off.
The tournament is a three-game, three-day quarterfinal-semifinal-final bracket format and will be held on Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay.
The games will be hosted by the San Francisco Golden Gate club, and the tournament’s main sponsor is Canterbury.
The Kahuku girls team defeated Hilo 23-17 Saturday to win the Hawaii Girls HS championship.
Hilo came into the final having won the last three state championships. Bolstered by some talent from Kona, such as Maraea Guzman, Kapoina Bailey, Nayeli Kahalewai, and Erica Larsen, the Reign defeated Kalihi 21-12 in Friday's semifinal.
The Kahuku Red Raiders won the Hawaii Boys State Championship, winning both their semifinal and final on Saturday.
Kahuku faced off with Kamehameha in the semis, winning comfortably 67-0.
This was Kamehameha’s first season and the players competed well through the season.
