HS Stories of the Year - Lightning Strikes
Lightning intervened in at least three state championship high school games this season, and to us, this constitutes a major story for the 2015-16 season.
Here’s why:

Great NW Challenge Girls Latest
Southern California dominated in the opening day of the Great Northwest Challenge Girls Varsity bracket.
The Griffins shut out Rhinos Training Academy and Montana in their pool games. In the other pool, Northern California ended the day 2-0, but it wasn't easy, as Rugby Oregon pushed them to the limit and, to a lesser extent, the Washington Loggers were tough.
Top Teams Flood Great Northwest Challenge
The only major HS all-star tournament West of the Continental Divide kicks off this weekend in Corvallis, Ore, with a massive feast of rugby at the Great Northwest Challenge.
And the tournament is also an interesting experiment to see how splitting off of all-star efforts from their State-Based Rugby Organizations works.
Union Titans Repeat for Oregon Single-School
The Union Titans repeated as Oregon single-school champions last week, defeating the Portland Pumas 49-38 in the final.
It was a dramatic and difficult final for Union as they had defeated Portland fairly easily in the regular season. But since then the Pumas had improved markedly, and studied Union enough to cause them some real problems.
Upset Win Gets Polk County Oregon Title
There weeks before Rugby Oregon’s finals weekend, undefeated Polk County faced off with undefeated Northside Panthers, and the Panthers won 38-17.
Both teams ended up winning their respective conferences anyway, but it seemed clear that Northside was the stronger team.
Of course, that’s why they play the playoffs.
