GRR: Florida Youth Rugby
Florida Youth Rugby will be unveiling its Boys HS schedules soon, and there have been some significant changes.
In Boys DI, gone are the four pools of four teams each, which provide competitors with a fairly unsatisfactory three-game schedule (and one pool had only three teams).
Replacing that system is ten-team DI competition.
Orlando is the Florida Youth Rugby boys HS champions after beating Weston 21-18 Saturday in Palm Beach.
The game was a very tight affair throughout, and a contrast of styles as Weston tried to get the ball out through the backs, using the playmaking ability of scrumhalf Alex Ruiz and Matthew Mairowitz, and some expressive running by fullback Ramiro Fernandez.
The Florida HS championship day is set for the International Polo Club in Wellington, Fla.
The final is set for the Florida Boys HS state championship after Weston beat Naples soundly, and Orlando escaped Riviera Beach in a wild, and close, contest.
The top four teams in Florida get cut down to two Saturday with the state semifinals.
Naples takes on Weston in one semi. The Bears finished their South Pool #1 season undefeated at 6-0, scoring about 27 points a game and allowing just under ten. Their 26-14 win over Key Biscayne to finish off the season was just about average, but a nice, crisp defeat of their closest rivals.
