Davis, Arkansas Win DIAA QFs
Arkansas and UC Davis are through to the DIAA semifinals after both won their quarterfinals Saturday at the UC Davis campus.
Davis defeated Sacramento State for third time this season, taking the Hornets down 38-5.
"We corrected some mistakes from the first half and kind of pulled through," said Davis Coach Kal Incendy. "We worked really hard on our defense and we played good team defense for the full 80 minutes."
Captain Josh Farnsworth led from the front for the Aggies, and No. 8 Harrison Morrow had a big day carrying the ball.
Meanwhile, Arkansas handed Utah State a 45-17 defeat. Head Coach Warren Fyfe said the game was less about his Razorbacks constructing long offensive sequences and wearing Utah State down, and more about punishing Utah State mistakes.
"It was a really tough, physical game, and we had to battle through some injuries, but our guys showed some good instincts to jump on errors," said Fyfe.
Fullback Josh Latham had a very good game on a day when the deep three as a unit needed play well, and did. His defensive players were key in keep Utah State off the scoresheet. Scrumhalf Alex Rees made some key defensive plays, as well.
"Our loose forwards did well all day to pretty much shut them down," said Fyfe. "Now we'll have to be even better tomorrow against Davis."
Looking ahead to Sunday's national DIAA semifinal, Incendy said "Arkansas is a team of tough competitors, and we know we're going to have to keep playing well as a team."
The winner of Sunday's game will meet the winner of Sunday's Eastern Bracket semifinals between AIC and Notre Dame, on May 7 in Moraga, Calif.
