The University of Washington Huskies put up a bit of a marker over the weekend, beating Oregon 14-10 on a cold, wet day in Seattle.

The Western Washington Vikings opened up their Northwest Collegiate Rugby Conference with a 49-7 defeat of Oregon Saturday.

Played at WWU’s Harrington Field, the game dropped Oregon to 0-2 and raised WWU to 1-0. Western played well despite the heartbreaking loss of Louie Henson, the team’s captain and powerful try-scoring prop. He is out for his senior season with a knee injury.

The Crusaders have won the last 15 Washington state championships, competed in five national title games, and continue to send alumni to national teams and scholarship-awarding colleges. Some of the program’s most impressive accomplishments aren’t acknowledged by awards, but they are nonetheless noteworthy.

The Liberty HS boys team won the U19 boys bracket of the first leg of the Rugby Washington Subway Summer Sevens Series.

Paced by a strong day from Michael Thomson, in his last game with the team, and with Austin Liddell also test defenses, Liberty defeated Seattle 31-19 in the final.

The Kent Crusaders girls team won the opening leg of the Rugby Washington HS 7s series, sponsored by Subway as part of the state summer games.

Kent, the top girls team in Washington almost every year, defeated Prairie 57-0 in their opening pool play game, and then shut out Rainier Plateau 34-0 in their second game.
