GRR: Women's Sevens World Series
It's 3rd place for the USA in the Women's tournament at the Cape Town 7s thanks to another excellent coalface effort from Ilona Maher and one key opportunistic play.
The USA women are into the semifinals at Cape Town despite a bit of an up-and-down day in South Africa.
The Eagles had already clinched a place in the quarterfinals when they faced France on Saturday, and it was a good thing as the French controlled this game.
Day One at the Cape Town 7s was a good one for the USA women's team.
Playing a slightly more varied attack that included a few switch moves, some better pass-follow, and a few short balls, the Eagles beat Japan 19-14 in a game they had under control and Canada 24-7.
Both USA 7s teams are in Cape Town for the next legs of the World Series.
This is Leg #3 for the men and #2 for the women. At least in future seasons it will be the same leg for each as everything will be evened out for the 2023-24 season.
The USA Women's 7s team took third in Dubai and the result, overall, puts them in a nice position to challenge for an automatic berth in the 2024 Olympics.
Finishing top four in the seven-event will do the job. The questions, though, are ... are the Eagles improving, and are they objectively one of the top four teams in the world?
