GRR: UCLA
There is so much rankings action this week in DIA Rugby it's hard to know where to start.
Let's start with the new #1 Cal. The Bears open their annual two-game series with the University of British Columbia.
Cal rode a strong second half to beat UCLA in the PAC Rugby Conference opener, and the Golden Bears followed that up with a defeat of NSCRO team Cal Maritime.
UCLA battled and held Cal to a 12-0 lead at halftime, before the Bears opened up to win 59-7.
The anticipated early-season clash between UCLA and Cal Poly ended up being not being as close as some (like this editor) expected.
A game though to have the potential to go either way ended up going heavily UCLA's way to the tune of 65-7. UCLA was fast and aggressive, led 41-0 at halftime, and cruised.
Cal won the Storer Classic and took a significant step forward in the process.
The annual tournament featuring University of California system programs has been won by Cal every year, but how they win it differs—sometimes it's a roll through all of the opponents, and sometimes it's a little tougher.
STANFORD, Calif. – California went 5-0 and won PAC 7s Champions on Sunday, taking the tournamet for the seventh time in the past eight years.
After going 3-0 to sweep pool play on Saturday, the Bears entered Sunday with a tough challenge against the UCLA Bruins in the Cup Semifinal.
