GRR: Rugby Texas
Who has won the major state, regional, or national championships in Boys HS Rugby?
Here's the list. Check back on this list for updates. The links on each state or regional group gives you news on that competition.
The Plano girls team went into the Texas Girls HS 7s championships knowing they had a big hill to climb.
Kingwood entered that same tournament undefeated over the season, and when Plano lost one of their pool games, 7-5 to HEB, it looked as if Kingwood might roll.
So much for predictions.
Westlake HS won the Texas state championship by a point, and it would be fair to say that without Ryan Rees, it wouldn’t have happened like that.
Of course, we could say that about anyone on the Westlake team, but we are picking Rees. The Chaps scrumhalf has had a good example to follow. His brother, Alex, is a star scrumhalf at Arkansas, and also filled that role at Westlake.
The Deep South Boys HS final is set for this weekend with the Bayou Hurricanes taking on Jesuit of New Orleans.
Jesuit, led by big Will Waguespack and shift Case Ellis, and some big plays in the scrum, defeated defending champs St. Paul’s in the semis this week.
Meanwhile, Bayou Hurricanes hammered the Barbarians behind another big game from Zavier Triplett.
The Woodlands cae back from a 13-0 deficit to defeat Katy 15-13 in a crucial matchup between the two Rugby Texas South Region teams.
With the victory, Woodlands improved to 4-0 and started off a tough string of games with a win, while Katy dropped to 5-1-1, but got a close-loss bonus point and remains in the playoff hunt in the conference.
