GRR: New York 7s
The New York 7s kicks off this weekend with 12 divisions of competition.
Once a go-to event on the club 7s calendar, the NY 7s is still that, but has seen the number of HS teams increase dramatically.
This year sees a HS Boys Premier and a HS Boys Open, as well as a HS Girls Premier and HS Girls Open.
Atlantis had a fruitful Thanksgiving weekend, as the all-star 7s team went 3-1 to win the New York 7s Girls High School Premier division. The men also won the Men's College division.
Billy Nicholas has been busy. He took over Lindenwood University’s varsity women’s program in August and coached the DI team to an Illinois conference title, before making an appearance in the fall Round of 16.
The jersey will look familiar – the aquamarine base, Roman numerals and logo – but will be accented with tribal designs not normally found on Atlantis kit. That’s because the girls U19 team playing at the New York 7s will be the first Atlantis/APEX side to take the field, and the new jersey is just one way in which the two entities will be combining forces.
The New York City Sevens squads have been announced to compete in the Aviva Premiership World Club 7s events to be held at Thomond Park, Limerick August 9-10 and Twickenham, London on August 16-17. These tournaments will see the New York side drawn against international powerhouses such as Auckland, Western Province and Saracens.
