GRR: Jesuit New Orleans
Brother Martin and St. Paul's will meet for the Louisiana State High School title next week after they won semifinals Saturday.
It's time to bring back our Gamebreakers column as boys HS rugby is now in (almost) full swing.
We saw some excellent clutch plays and strong performances around the country this past week, from West Virginia out to Southern California. Here's a look at some special efforts from High School rugby around the nation:
It's a tight race in the Louisiana HS league as both games this weekend were decided by a try or less, and in fact three of the four league games this year have been that close.
This week, St. Paul's opened their season with a nicely-taken 33-26 defeat of the Bayou Hurricanes. That put Bayou at 0-2-1 although the Hurricanes have certainly played some good rugby.
Austin, Texas high school team Lake Travis will kick it all off this weekend with a trip to Louisiana to take on New Orleans Jesuit and Brother Martin.
For Lake Travis this will be a new start after last year's abbreviated season that was made all the more frustrating because they felt they had a very strong team.
This past weekend, the Jesuit of New Orleans Blue Jay rugby team faced their longtime nemesis, the Bayou Hurricanes, in the Louisiana rugby state championship.
The match was played at the NOLA Gold stadium, immediately after the professional match between the NOLA Gold and the Utah Warriors. The Jays won the match, 19-7, and with it, their third-consecutive state championship.
