Carroll played for Australia in 1908 and 1912, a loss to Wales, a win in the Olympic final, in which he scored two tries, and a defeat of the USA in 1912.
It was that tour of North America that changed his life, as the skilled flyhalf decided to stay in the United States. A year later he was on the USA team that lost to New Zealand.
