Surprise Win in Georgia
The Lassiter Trojans remain undefeated in Georgia HS rugby after upsetting top team Alpharetta Phoenix's A squad this weekend in a very physical encounter.
Phoenix, understrength and perhaps fatigued after their Ruggerfest Tournament win last weekend, struggled to answer Lassiter's strong pack and talented halfbacks Freddy Purdy and Shea O'Hanlon.
Lassiter scored first after a series of phases set up Mo Abdullah. Phoenix replied with an unconverted score from center Chris Bagby, but this was as close as they would come. The Trojans controlled possession through a strong lineout and powerful counter-rucking giving the Phoenix backs little opportunity to show their speed. Trojans led throughout and put the game away with a storming run from JP Gouin. Final score 19-12.
It''s a good best these two will meet again in the state final April 24.
In other games, Norsemen secured the final playoff spot by defeating Phoenix "B" by 31-19 after Roswell had beaten Lambert by 38-33. In the other game, playoff bound Mill Creek beat Walton convincingly by 45-12.
