GRR: Wando
Wando won the South Carolina Boys HS championship in dramatic fashion, beating South Greenville 25-24 on the final play of the game.
In a tense game where neither team was able to really break free, Wando got some excellent work from the center pairing of Jon and Josh Cummings, who held South Greenville's effective midfield in check much of the day.
It will be ,as expected, Wando v South Greenville in the South Carolina championship game this coming weekend.
Wando handled Greenville HS in fairly impressive fashion, running out to a 21-0 lead and cruising to a 33-10 victory.
South Greenville defeated Irmo 27-7 in the other semi.
Wando remains undefeated in South Carolina after beating one of their chief rivals, Chapin, 47-0, and then defeated a Canadian touring team 21-17.
Wando's place as #1 in South Carolina isn't so much of a surprise to observers, but few would have expected the Mount Pleasant school team to have shut out all four of their league opponents.
In any competition, that takes some doing. Wando Head Coach Tod Shepherd joked that it was luck, but he also knows it's partly by design.
Wando, ranked 1st in the state and 21st nationally, was able to capitalize on depth and experience to capture their first state title.
Greenville, ranked 2nd in the state and 25th nationally, captured the top title in 2008 and played a great match, but ultimately failed to take advantage of their opportunities to put points on the board.
