GRR: St. Mary's
When colleges started playing serious 7s rugby, everyone assumed Saint Mary’s would be good at it; and so the Gaels were, but at the same time, they never won a national title.
They came close - finishing second in 2011 and usually pushing for a spot in the semis or winning the Plate. But Sunday, Saint Mary’s won it all.
Fans of Saint Mary’s will happily point out that on Saturday, the Gaels won pretty much every stat, except the score; and they might point out that Life didn’t really break the Saint Mary’s line; and Life University might just say “yep, that’s right.”
Playing in their fourth straight USA Rugby D1A National Championship match, the Life U Men's Rugby team put on a gutsy performance to win 24-20 over Saint Mary's College Saturday in Moraga, Calif.
Trivia question: Of the five DIA finals held, how many were decided by more than a try?
Answer: One.
That’s right, one. And that one, Saint Mary’s 21 Life 6 in 2014, was close until the very end when the Gaels scored a try at the death.
Life University and Saint Mary’s will meet each other once more for the DIA championship, marking the fourth year in a row that these two schools will meet for the top prize in college rugby.
Life rode a superb defensive performance to a 41-7 victory over Lindenwood.
