GRR: Sao Paulo 7s
USA Rugby Press Release
SÃO PAULO – The Women’s Eagles Sevens gained 10 points from São Paulo Sevens Sunday as the sixth-best team with a 14-5 loss to England in the Plate Final at Arena Barueri.
The USA Women have life yet, as their 26-7 win over Spain was enough for the last berth to the Sao Paulo 7s Cup quarterfinals. The Eagles (1-2) finished third in Pool A, and with a points differential of -6, beat out fellow third-best Fiji (-17) for a spot in tomorrow's playoffs.
Optimism prevailed when the USA Women 7s team scored during the opening 30 seconds against France, but momentum never realized itself. The teams scored two tries apiece in the second round of the Sao Paulo 7s, but two conversions from Christelle Le Duff gave France the necessary margin of victory, 14-12.
The USA Women needed to be clinical in its opening match at the Sao Paulo 7s today, and it wasn't. Unforced errors and an overmatched defense allowed New Zealand to score five tries in the 35-12 loss.
The USA Women 7s team has been in Brazil for four days now, acclimating to Sao Paulo’s humidity and training in intermittent rain, as the second leg of the World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series looms ahead. The Sao Paulo 7s will kick off this Saturday, Feb. 7, and the USA will look to improve upon its 7th place finish in Dubai.
