GRR: Rugby Arizona
States are starting to crown their high school champions.
Tempe secured the Arizona boys state championship Saturday with a convincing 45-15 win over rivals Red Mountain.
In an impressive showing in Arizona, #9 HS Club Tempe defeated #2 HS Club Red Mountain 27-19.
Tempe started strong and scored two minutes into the game, but Red Mountain replied to take a 7-5 lead before the game was six minuted old. Red Mountain punished Tempe for a poor restart and a series of penalties.
While there are several high school rugby teams playing a little on the down-low, there are leagues and tours that have been approved by governing bodies, and teams that have secured their own insurance to get the job done.
Tempe made it two wins this weekend with a 19-12 defeat of South Orange County, a Southern California team coming in for a visit.
Ashton Liddell was named the player of the game with Alani Maafu having a strong game in the forwards and Aki Pulu once again dangerous in the backs.
