GRR: Olympics
The boo birds might have made themselves heard at Stade de France but the USA will have been satisfied with their start at the Men’s Rugby 7s event in the Paris Olympics.
Playing against the host nation, the USA escaped with a 12-12 tie and while it wasn’t a victory, it was a good first step for a team expected to battle for a quarterfinal place.
The Olympic 7s rugby competition kicks off Wednesday with the men's pools on the pitch.
Rugby and soccer both start before Friday's Opening Ceremonies in order to squeeze everything in. This is potentially a good thing for the rugby competition because it's the only thing going on, so mainstream coverage (NBC/Peacock in the USA) will spend a lot of time on it.
(GRR Contribution)—The Paris 2024 Olympics could present a real opportunity for the rugby sevens to grow and develop in America, if the USA men’s and women’s sides see medal success.
Forty men and women athletes from Premier Rugby Sevens (PR7s) are scheduled to play across 11 rugby teams at the 2024 Paris Olympics starting this month. PR7s is the first sports organization of its kind, with eight men’s and eight women’s teams competing under one umbrella with equal pay.
The USA Men’s 7s team going to Paris is, not surprisingly, a blend of old and new.
