GRR: Los Alamitos
Since the beginning of the Southern California school season, Los Alamitos was in the conversation.
But, as we saw throughout the December-through-February season, there were a lot of close games at the top, which meant the playoffs were somewhat up in the air. Los Al lost to Torrey Pines on December 15 by the score of 15-12.
It will be Orange Lutheran vs Los Alamitos in the Southern California Single-School final next week after both won semifinals this weekend.
Los Alamitos, which had lost a nailbiter to Torrey Pines way back in December, handed Torrey Pines their first league loss of the season. In an entertaining contest Los Al pulled out 24-19 winners.
Southern California HS teams have been testing each other out before the Christmas break to get themselves prepped for the regular season ahead.
That regular season kicks off really soon—the first weekend in January in fact—so there isn't much time for these teams to get themselves up to speed.
Los Alamitos Boys have hit the ground running in Southern California.
And that's a good thing seeing as the team hasn't played 15-a-side rugby since 2019 thanks to the COVID pandemic.
"It feels great to have a full team again," said club president Steve Faupusa.
Los Alamitos continues to make waves in Southern California and could well be on its way to a title in the Southern California Youth Rugby Boys Varsity White Division.
Los Al has doubled its numbers from last year, and that's allowed them to field a 2nd side, even with a large number of underclassmen in the varsity squad.
