GRR: Fort Hunt
The Rugby Virginia boys HS season is down to two teams, as Fort Hunt and West End will face off after both won their preliminary playoff games this past weekend.
West End took care of a combined Newport News / Norfolk side 34-7, and Western Loudoun/great Falls 47-5.
A high-level invitational comes to Virginia with the Mid-Atlantic Youth Rugby Festival.
Xavier HS laid down a very impressive performance over the weekend with a 59-7 defeat of Fort Hunt.
A hugely physical game, Xavier brought some of the size and power they have in other years lacked. With some monstrous hits in the opening minutes the tone for the game was set early on and the game looked to be a grind-it-out affair.
Gonzaga HS defeated Fort Hunt 33-12 Saturday in an early-season high-ranking clash.
Gonzaga, ranked #1 among single-school teams, had to deal with a couple of injuries, but bested an improving Fort Hunt squad.
"The forwards did an excellent job," enthused Gonzaga Head Coach Peter Baggetta. "They took over the game."
Virginia HS club Fort Hunt took a trip to North Carolina over the weekend and returned with plenty of things to work on, as the #3-ranked Warriors lost to the Raleigh Redhawks and Charlotte Tigers.
