GRR: Club 7s
USA Rugby bestowed a much-agreed-with honor this past weekend when it named the Club 7s Championships trophy after Emil Signes.
Commerce City, Colo. — A heavy college influence helped the Rugby Utah Men's 7s team go undefeated throughout the 2016 USA Rugby Club 7s National Championships to win its first national title.
Rugby Utah defeated the Kansas City Blues in the final 48-12.
If you didn’t know much about the American Rugby Pro Training Center (ARPTC), chances are you do now. The Little Rock-based Olympic Development Academy (ODA) won the women’s Club 7s National Championship over the weekend, and did so with a cast of relatively unknown players.
A strong college presence will help Old Blue try to climb the club 7s championship mountain next week, with recent collegians Michael Al-Jiboori (Oklahoma), Dylan Carrion (Arkansas State), Harry Higgins (Arkansas State), Gavan D'Amore Morrison (AIC), Marcus Henderson (Stanford), Michael St. Claire (Stony Brook), and Bobby McMahon (Columbia) on the club's squad for the big tournament.
The 7s season is nearly over – except for the 16 women’s teams advancing to next weekend’s Club 7s Championship. All but one team are propelled by senior players, but there’s a smattering of college players, and even high schoolers, who will be helping women’s teams in Des Moines, Iowa, Aug. 8-9.
