GRR: Central Washington
When Jenny Johnson entered her final semester of high school, she knew what was awaiting her post-graduation. Her older sister was playing basketball at Central Washington University, and in November 2013, Johnson signed her National Letter of Intent to do the same. But after her senior season of basketball, she tried rugby, and everything changed.
Until the final play of the game, it appeared that Virginia Women’s Rugby (UVA) had orchestrated an impressive upset over Central Washington during the Women's College 7s Championship semifinals. But the Wildcats used their final play of the game to tie it up, and then the ever-dependable Cassidy Meyers converted her try for the 12-10 win.
It was only 10-0 at half, but Virginia Women’s Rugby (UVA) pulled away for a 29-0 Cup quarterfinal win over Rutgers at the College 7s National Championship. UVA will play Central Washington, which defeated Cal 24-5 in its first knockout of the day, in the Cup semifinals at 12:40 p.m. MT.
One of two things was going to happen today. Either Central Washington was going to cap off its momentous season by upsetting the reigning DI champion, or Penn State was going to win its fourth consecutive (10th total) trophy. The Nittany Lions reiterated why it’s the winningest program in the women’s college game, and posted a 61-7 victory today at Kennesaw State, Ga.
The Women's DI College National Championship will be contested at 2pm ET on Saturday, May 9. Below are the starting lineups:
