By Samantha Hoegle - Nestled along the coast of Maine is Bowdoin College, a small, liberal arts College known for delicious food, challenging academics, and successful athletics. Bowdoin College is also host to Polar Bear Rugby Camp, July 14 – 17, run by Coach MaryBeth Mathews of the Bowdoin Women’s Varsity Rugby Team.
Bowdoin is 3-0 in the New England Small College (NESC) conference, and there’s little doubt that the Polar Bears will repeat as league champion again this fall. Bowdoin’s most recent win came against Amherst, which forfeited due to numbers and combined with the Brunswick, Maine, side for a friendly.
Labor Day Weekend starts with some exciting women’s college games, which involve five DI and DII varsity programs going head-to-head.
Bowdoin College survived a nerve-testing weekend. The Polar Bears won two playoff games against Tri-State teams by a combined 51-37, and have been rewarded with a trip to the USA Rugby Women’s DII College Fall Championship, hosted by ACRA, final four. It will be the Maine team’s second trip ever, the first coming in 2006-07, when it lost to eventual champion UC Santa Cruz.
