Scholz and Sorensen Award News
Fans and college team players and coaches can help nominate a player for the MA Sorensen Award.
Presented every year by the Washington Athletic Club, the MA Sorensen Award is named after groundbreaking rugby player and doctor MaryAnn Sorensen and has been presented to the top women collegiate rugby player in the USA every year since 2016.
The Washington Athletic Club hosts the WAC Rugby Awards Saturday in Seattle, with Freda Tafuna and Wyatt Parry receiving, respectively, the MA Sorensen and Rudy Scholz Awards in person.
Standing alone atop women’s college rugby, Freda Tafuna knows she’s not alone. In fact, playing this ultimate of team sports has always been a team game for Tafuna, on and off the field.
Wyatt Parry’s journey to being the Rudy Scholz Award-winner took a side trip a few years ago, and it was one that had a profound effect on him.
In the end he’s just a student-athlete and rugby player at BYU who was shocked to find out he’s won the accolade as the top men’s collegiate rugby player in the country.
Wyatt Parry of BYU has been named the 2024 winner of the Rudy Scholz Award as the best male collegiate rugby player in the United States.
A product of what is now the Tribal rugby program in St. George, Utah, Parry is the architect of a high-flying BYU attack and he led BYU to two straight D1A semifinal appearances.
