GRR: St. Augustine
The SCIRF season kicked off this week, and St. Augustine and Mira Costa logging victories in the opening round.
St. Augustine defeated Fallbrook 29-5 in the league opener. While the players were excited to play the game, the mistakes crept in just like you'd expect in the first game of the season.
Fallbrook edged St. Augustine 14-13 in the SCIRF league, clinching, just barely, a place in the league final against Cathedral Catholic.
"A very intense game," said Fallbrook Head Coach Sierra Arteaga, who was on the last Fallbrook team to make a major regional final. "It was great to be a part of it."
Who plays Cathedral Catholic in the SCIRF Boys final will be determined this Saturday as the two teams with only one loss face off.
That one loss for Fallbrook and for St. Augustine was, of course, to Cathedral (who are 7-0).
This promises to be a tight game, with the two teams having had very similar results against the same opponents.
The Holy Bowl is an intense rivalry between San Diego high schools Cathedral Catholic and St Augustine; it's been contested in many sports for over 70 years, and in rugby for 14, including Friday night.
St. Augustine, Cathedral Catholic, and Fallbrook are all atop the SCIRF league now after all three won over the weekend.
Led by a solid effort from prop Gabe Mendoza and with fullback George Aquilar showing plenty of skill, Fallbrook beat Warren HS 57-12 to move to 3-0 in the league, which is the best record because the other two teams have only played twice.
