SCIRF Kicks Off as Saints, Mustangs Win
The SCIRF season kicked off this week, and St. Augustine and Mira Costa logging victories in the opening round.
St. Augustine defeated Fallbrook 29-5 in the league opener. While the players were excited to play the game, the mistakes crept in just like you'd expect in the first game of the season.
Fallbrook hung tough and were within 10 points at 15-5 at halftime. The second half saw the Saints settled down a little better and become more precise in attack.
"The defense held up well," said Head Coach Eric Dent.
Sophomore Gavin Lowe stood out for St. Augustine, bringing some powerful tackles and was all kinds of trouble with the ball in hand. Lowe scored a try and was involved throughout the game. Flyhalf Colin Shughrou operated nicely and ran the attack, while in the forwards Geno McKenna ran well and scored a try.
Caelyb Aguirre showed plenty of potential to be a formidable attacker in the midfield.
"Looking to the season, we are excited to see our new leaders step up," said Dent. "We have some really strong players who will guide the team. The ability of the younger players to step and assume big roles will be critical to our success this season. We can't wait to get after it."
Mira Costa defeated Mission Vista 33-7.
This result came despite the fact that several Mira Costa players were out sick. Inside center Parker Conley was outstanding on a team that is underclassman-heavy. However, the youth movement is good news as Mira Costa's numbers have grown significantly with 60 on the boys roster so far and 24 playing with the girls.
"We are still very much undersized," said Head Coach Duke Dulgarian. "However, we have a good portion of our squad that have been playing rugby for some time now and we are hoping our experience will counter our lack of size."
It seemed to this week.
Next up Cathedral is slated to face Fallbrook while Mission Bay will actually be holding a food drive.
